Writer Interview

In the vibrant literary scene of Porto, writers from diverse backgrounds come together to share their passion for the written word. Today, we're thrilled to introduce Olga Domingues Da Cunha, a Russian-born author who has found inspiration in the cobblestone streets and rich culture of our beautiful city.

From Russia with Love (for Writing)

Olga, who moved to Portugal less than a year ago, brings a unique perspective to the Just Write Porto community. With a background in marketing and a deep-rooted love for classic Russian literature, Olga's journey as a writer is as fascinating as the stories she crafts.

"I've always dreamed of writing books," Olga shares. "Last year I faced the fact that life is finite and decided it was time to start making my dreams come true." This realization sparked a prolific period in Olga's life, leading her to seriously pursue writing in 2024.

A Blend of Genres and Philosophies

Olga's writing defies easy categorization. "I write in different genres, but all my stories have social and philosophical themes," she explains. This versatility is evident in her upcoming works. Her novel "The Architect," set for release in June 2024, explores the intriguing concept of fate and free will.

Olga gives us a tantalizing glimpse into the plot:

"One autumn day, the Architect sets out for an exhibition of fates. In his hand is a small suitcase containing a TV—a container of fate."

This unique premise promises a thought-provoking read that challenges readers to consider the nature of destiny and choice.

Porto: A Source of Inspiration

Living in Porto has had a profound impact on Olga's writing. "I am glad to be part of the 'Just Write Porto' community, it is very inspiring and also very useful," she enthuses. "And also in my current book the main character lives in Porto."

The city's influence extends beyond mere setting. Olga finds the community of writers in Porto to be a wellspring of support and motivation. "The opportunity to share experiences and spend time with people who also write, understand your thoughts, problems with books and can support you," is what she values most about the local writing scene.

Balancing Act: Writing and Life

Like many writers, Olga faces the challenge of balancing her creative pursuits with other responsibilities. Her dedication is evident in her approach: "I wrote my first book when I worked 8-10 hours a day, then had dinner and sat down to write. I wrote all weekend. And eventually published a book."

Now, with more flexibility in her schedule, Olga has developed a disciplined routine. "I try to write in the morning every day. Writing is the most important goal," she says. This commitment to her craft is paying off, with multiple projects in the pipeline.

Current Projects and Future Plans

Olga is currently working on a science fiction novel titled Good Offer

She describes it as "my attempt to tell a little more about office work, about processes, about burnout and depression, but instead of real colleagues, the main character has colleagues - aliens, and he himself works in an intergalactic office with it’s own oddities."

This clever blend of the mundane and the fantastic promises to offer fresh insights into contemporary work culture. Be sure to visit her website at olgacunha.com for more information.

Advice for Aspiring Writers

When asked what advice she would give to aspiring writers, Olga's response is both simple and profound:

"Just write! Focus on this. But also start thinking about promoting your book."

This balanced approach reflects Olga's background in marketing and her understanding of the modern publishing landscape.
