Writer Interview

In the heart of Porto, where ancient streets whisper stories of centuries past, American-Portuguese author Jeannine Johnson Maia finds endless inspiration for her historical fiction. A regular face at Just Write! Porto's Monday morning sessions, Jeannine brings a wealth of experience as both a journalist and novelist to our vibrant writing community.

Finding Home in History

"When I had the opportunity to live in Porto, a city I love, I took it," Jeannine shares, explaining how decades of holiday visits and family connections led to her settling in northern Portugal. "It made sense professionally too, since I mainly write historical fiction that takes place in Portugal."

This deep connection to Portuguese culture and history shines through in her work, including her latest novel, "The Filigree Master's Apprentice" (published in 2023 as "O Rapaz do Douro" in Portuguese). The book transports readers to 1877 Porto, where the construction of Gustave Eiffel's iconic bridge serves as the backdrop for a young apprentice's journey of redemption and discovery.

The Writing Life

For Jeannine, writing isn't just a passion—it's a full-time commitment. "On a productive day, I'm often doing something writing-related between about 10 am and 7 pm," she explains. But what might surprise many is her unique approach to writer's block: "If you ever see me out walking, lost in my thoughts, don't be surprised. When I'm stuck in my story or don't know what my characters want, I often trek along the coast with them, asking questions."

Her favorite writing spot isn't a traditional office but rather a welcoming café near the coast in Gaia, where good coffee and the perfect atmosphere help fuel her creativity. This balance of structure and flexibility has helped her produce works like "Rossio Square N.º 59," her compelling novel about WWII Lisbon.

Community and Growth

The Porto writing community has become an integral part of Jeannine's creative life. "The Just Write Porto group gets me off to a good start on Monday mornings," she says. "I've found international writers who have decided to settle in Porto to be a very welcoming, supportive group. Their creativity inspires me."

This supportive environment has also enhanced her connection to Portuguese literature. Despite reading more slowly in Portuguese than in English or French, she cherishes the opportunity to meet Portuguese authors and discover more about her adopted country through their works.

Advice for Aspiring Writers

When asked about advice for emerging writers, Jeannine's response is refreshingly direct: "Butt in chair. The only thing you can't improve is a blank page. If you don't know how to start, try 'I have no idea what to write today.' Then keep going. You'll be surprised."

She emphasizes the importance of momentum: "If you write regularly, you'll stay in your world and with your characters and their emotions. That makes forging ahead so much easier."

Current Projects

Currently, Jeannine is working on a novel set in Portugal during the 1940s and 1950s. Unlike her previous work, which relied heavily on books and online resources, this project has benefited immensely from her local connections. "I have access to people who have been incredibly generous with their experiences and memories," she shares, "and I hope all I'm learning will make my next novel richer and even more authentic."
